MORE than two thousand miles away, in a remote cabin in the mountains of Montana, the killer had watched the press conference on satellite television with interest and growing concern. He had been hovering on the cusp of a decision for a while, and the revelations at the conference tipped the scales in favor of immediate action.
He was ready to flee the country on almost a moment’s notice but still had a few things to take care of, notably retrieving various sums of money that he had stashed in a half-dozen safe-deposit boxes in as many cities, all under different names.
Monique had given her final performance two weeks previously at about the time that he had carried out his last hit. He began to pack, thinking as he did so that he was truly going to miss this isolated place.
He got in his old pickup truck and drove ten miles over twisting gravel roads to the nearest general store, which also housed a small post office. He told the proprietor to hold his mail as he was going to be gone for a month or two. The proprietor told him that two men had been in the store two days previously asking about him.
“Did they ask for me by name?” he said, fighting a certain feeling of panic.
“No, they asked for you by a different name, but described you to a T,” the owner said. “I told them that I hadn’t seen anyone resembling you and that I had never heard of that name. I’m not sure they believed me.”
“Describe them for me?” he said.
The owner described two rent-a-thugs that the killer knew all too well.
“What happened after you told them that?”
“They left, heading east,” came the reply.
Back at his cabin, in full panic mode, he finished packing. Leaving his old pickup truck behind, he loaded his gear in a new SUV and left, taking a different route that led, somewhat circuitously, in the opposite direction from the general store. Damn that George, he thought. He’s just too smart. And damn the thugs who work for his handlers. He had no idea how they had tracked him to this remote part of the country, but the fact that they had done so had him truly frightened.
